Themes not Bands in Netflix’s “This is Pop”

Netflix recently aired a series “This is Pop” which looked at the history and themes of Pop music. What was unexpected is that each episode looked at different themes regarding Pop culture instead of the bands and artists. The only bands that get the individual attention that they deserve is Boyz II Men in the premier episode, and Oasis and Blur in the Britpop episode chronicling their feud. It is unknown why “This is Pop” is structured in this way, maybe because it is easier to get more information in a single season. Although why would Netflix do it like that to begin with considering that there are other docuseries out there that are not formatted way. It sort of turns their audience away because it comes across as a series filled with useless trivia.

The only other docuseries that are structured theme-like are the true crime series. It may attract some people who are truly interested in true crime, but for a lot of other people it does not really attract attention. Some of the movie docuseries like Disney Plus “Prop Culture” or Netflix’s “The Movies that Made Us” focus solely on the individual films. In “Prop Culture” prop collector Dan Lanigan tracks down movie props and sometimes reunites them with the actors that used them. In “The Movies that Made Us” each episode interviews the directors and the actors and focuses on each individual movie. Netflix has also…
