Selena Netflix Series Portrays her Music, Career and Family Life
The Start of Selena Y Los Dinos
Selena, the series on Netflix, chronicles her life, family and career both in music and the fashion industry. In season 1, the setting is 1978 during the recession. The Quintanilla family lost their family restaurant Papagayos and filed for bankruptcy. They also ended up moving in with Abraham’s brother, Uncle Hector and their family in Corpus Christi, Texas. Selena had to share a room with her parents, A.B. and Suzette.
The premiere takes place during Selena’s childhood and with her father, Abraham Quintanilla starting a family band, Southern Pearl. Southern Pearl previously performed at Papagayos but then would perform at weddings, nursing homes and other places throughout the area. In the series, Southern Pearl would eventually change its name to Selena y Los Dinos. Selena did the vocals, her sister Suzette was on the drums, and her brother Abraham (A.B) was on the guitar. The idea was to start a Tejano band which was a form of Mexican American music that mixes with German Polka. In addition to Tejano music, Selena Y Los Dinos would also play oldies.
